on shopping.

For me, shopping is like masturbating in public. There is a feeling of exposure and, at the same time, depersonalization: you watch yourself finger a polo shirt, or inspect a cuff with the sort of creeping existential dread normally reserved for the characters in a Sartre play.

-- Slovenian philosopher, Slavoj Žižek (1998).

I think it's a little bit of an uncomfortable space, which I like. It's probably a good thing that the store makes you self-aware and self-conscious - a clothing store, a shoe store - because in part you're scrutinizing your identity.

-- Store designer, Rafael de Cárdenas.

A Day with a born-to-be Princess.

[...]
Her:
hey do you mind if I walked on this side and you on that one?
Him:

what do you mean?
Her:
Can I walk on your left side?
Him
:
... sure... but why?
Her:
that way you can fight off dragons with your right arm and protect me with your left...
Him:
... okay!
[...]

Her:
You know... I am tiny inside...
Him:
(choking on his food) WHAT?
Her:
I am so tiny, but I can eat big!

.... silence

Her:

I mean
when it comes to food, I can eat like a monster.
Him:
oh!
yeah yeah!
Her:
What's wrong?
Him:
no no, I agree. You're small and you have a big appetite, you can eat a lot.
Her:
hihihihi... yeah!
[...]

Her:
Hey, can you come with me to check out the "Human Body and Organ exhibition"?
Him:
Yeah it should be interesting, I was planning to go too.
Her:
Oh my God! I so want to go, but I am afraid to go there on my own...
Him:
Why is that?
Her:
I would be afraid... You know, it is weird that I am afraid to see something that is already inside me.
Him:
But fear too is inside you...

... silence

Her:
Wait I know you said something very smart here, I am just trying to figure it out...
Him:
Take your time.

Talk to the Frame!

Not to burst any body's bubble or anything, but I was watching the news tonight on LBC, and they were reporting Bernard Kouchner's first visit to Lebanon.

Sure enough, and as diplomacy, and Sarcozy dictate, Kouchner had "formal" visits to pay, amongst which a visit to Saad el Hariri the son of our murdered ex prime minister Rafic el Hariri.

They were seated in the reception hall:
The entourage, then Kouchner, an empty chair, and then Saad el Hariri. On the empty chair was a frame with a picture of Saad's father, the late prime minister...

I understand that it is out of respect and all, but honestly why do we do that? It is freaky! We should stop!

Can you imagine what was going on in Kouchner's head staring at the picture of a dead guy, while cameras flashed at him?

I Love Alanis.

Ever since “Ironic’ in 1996, I fell in love with that talented hippy chick from Ontario. We used to live in the same neighborhood in Toronto. We used to shop in the same grocery store; a very cool down to earth girl.

With her new hit-started-as-spoof song, a remake of Black Eyed Peas’ “my humps”, Alanis Morissette has done it again, and is re-defining music yet another time.

Here’s how I see it:
Nowadays, a lot of the hit hip-hop, or techno songs, are remakes (remixes) of ballades from the 90s. In my modest (non-expert) opinion, the 90s weren’t the best decade in music history. Sure there were amazing breakthroughs, but I still think remixes are getting more popularity amongst crowds. Maybe because we heard them before, maybe because we get nostalgic, I don’t know; but I find it to be very true.

I think Alanis saw that, and is at it with a vengeance.

She took one of the “modern world’s” sexiest, most successful, most objectifying to women hip-hop hit, and turned it into one of her 90s ballades. She killed it, and brought it back to her era. Back when She ruled in popularity.
I think her parody remake of “my humps” is actually better than the original; although I honestly loved the Black Eyed Peas version. But I just find that Alanis’ is a better, more beautiful re-composition for the same words. (you can watch the video here).

Miss Morissette did the first step in taking new music and adapting it back to authenticity. I think many should follow. I think many will…

And that’s a new decade of music, a new era of creativity… an evolution.

Long Distance_01

I usually call her before I go to sleep. I am in my bed, and she is on her way to work. She is already in her car, driving the bustling highway, drinking her morning coffee, while talking to me on her cell phone.
She started her day full charge and already multitasking, while on the other side of the planet, I am finding it hard even to articulate and formulate useful sentences.

That doesn’t mean that I am lazy. That just means that we’re truly worlds apart.
(Although I am a bit lazy)

There are many means of communication these days to make your life easier, and make you “reachable” anywhere in the world. We use most of them. Except we never sent each other carrier pigeons, nor smssed with white smoke.

We invested so much in being in-touch… But in our own way.

I say in our own way, because people usually don’t find that we communicate well… she and I. We normally approve understandingly, because honestly we never feel that they deserve an explanation. We really don’t make a big deal out of it; we don’t even think about it twice…

Pouf! Dissolves into thin air.

We do communicate. We communicate extremely well… But in our own way. We are one of those couples who are able to communicate a lot, without saying much. There is no such thing as “uncomfortable silence” between us. Anything is welcomed, enjoyed, and appreciated, be it silence, talk, or song.

A lot is said with silence anyway. People should try it even.

She and I… We’re worlds apart, yet so much alike

One, by U2 is one of my favorite songs. I found this version of the song, by pure chance; a very sexy performance by French Vanessa Paradis.

I prefer the audio for the video because it makes you dream and imagine a bit, but if you want, you can click Here for the video.
